What this essay will cover
The claim that Jesus alone is head of the church, argued from the primary texts, tested against the earliest practice, and defended against the strongest objections.
Primary evidence
- The headship texts.
Colossians 1:18 — “he is the head of the body, the church.”Ephesians 1:22–23 — all things under his feet, given as head over all things to the church. - Ownership language.
Acts 20:28 — the church of God, purchased with his own blood. - The foundation laid once.
1 Corinthians 3:11 — no other foundation can be laid.
Secondary evidence
- How the earliest congregations made decisions: prayer, apostolic teaching, and consensus (
Acts 15 as a worked example) rather than a ruling office above the elders. - The absence in the New Testament of any official above a local eldership.
Objections and replies
- “Someone must hold the keys — what about
Matthew 16:18–19 and the Petrine texts?” - “Didn’t the church need visible leadership to survive the apostles?”
